"THE DARK SHOW is an exhibition that takes place in the dark and where the artworks will provide the only source of light. Seventeen artists have been invited to make new work, and the exhibition will include a flickering film projection, a recital under green light, unexpected flash photography, science fiction and a symphony of drumming, wind and whistling. Visitors will be offered flashing communication devices to navigate the room which will be doubled by its blue reflection and contain transparent architectural features, shapes that glitter in the dark and shadows that suddenly loom. There will be work that is dark, work that has “dark” subject matter and work that takes darkness as its subject matter, as well as images that slowly fade, and pictures and objects hidden in the darkness.
This exhibition presents a situation where the physical limits of the gallery space are no longer apparent. Artworks are revealed individually and in small groups as a constantly evolving series of scenes, each one different from the next. The relationships between works become exaggerated as they depend on each other for the light to be visible and the darkness to disappear, but at the same time they are self-contained and isolated by the dark. Many different exhibitions are generated from the constantly changing combinations of images, objects and sounds which overlap to form a fluid and distorted landscape in which the viewer’s sense of distance and scale are destabilised by the inconsistent sources of light."
