Vein alternates material for different groupings of the three instruments in the piece. Opening material invokes all three instruments at once to frame and later intersect slowly repeated and rising notes of the harp played près de la table, viola pizzicati snapped against the fingerboard, and passages of different dynamics mirrored exactly between the flute and viola and set to a single interval. The piece closes with the gesture of falling snow.
Vein was written for the Debussy Trio and is the winner of the Debussy Trio Music Foundation's 1996 Composition Competition. The piece is published by Fatrock Ink in Los Angeles. Scores and parts are available for purchase on their website. Vein was written in June and July 1996.
